Guess What?! Chicken butt!

So according to the New York Times homepage professional baseball has begun a new season. Color me surprised. I guess that would explain the recent glut of opinion pieces about baseball. But honestly, baseball... such a stupid sport.

Logistically, Baseball is completely screwy. Here you have a sport where at any one moment, only 10 players are on an incredibly large field. And at any one moment, perhaps two of them are actually doing anything of interest.

What would otherwise be a multi-purpose (soccer, lacrosse, frisbee, picnic) field is broken up by a large dirt ring centered on a raised pile of dirt. Considering the shortage of field space in the city, the way a baseball field is constructed and used seems to me to be incredibly devilish.

Also, the Rutgers women's basketball team is in the championship game tomorrow.

Yeah, I never understand why people like baseball. I think people who like baseball fall into 3 categories: people who like sports so much that they also like baseball (my Mom); people who are semi-autistic and therefore find all the baseball stats and history interesting; people who are just posers, can't possibly find baseball interesting, and just pretend to like it to annoy the rest of us!-- and to lord it over us somehow that they understand baseball well enough to like it, and that if only we understood it, we'd like it too.

uh, and the fourth category: my other relatives who like baseball. Oh, and people who like to get drunk and chat at the games (me).

Anyway, the headline of this post is false advertising. I thought this was a post about chicken butt.

i would like to add another category: people who don't like sports but say they like baseball in order to gain credibility for liking at least one sport, even though it doesn't count because let's face it--it's not a sport.

That is a good point. Yeah, if bowling is not a sport, for sure baseball is not a sport.

segue: they don't consider cheerleading a sport, but i think if you can be reasonably ablebodied and still break your neck doing something it should classified as a sport.

I don't know if breaking your neck should be a requirement for being a sport. I am willing to recognize bowling, golfing, race-car driving and cheer-leading as sports (along with baseball). They're not very good sports. But they are competitive pass-times.

In my mind there are two classifications. Sports which is very inclusive (e.g. tag qualifies). And Good Sports which isn't nearly as broad.
