Well, I don't think it's the sport you're thinking of. The internet says it's a reference to Hollywood Squares ("I'll take Gilbert Godfrey for the win").

well FTW was the original. The wry FTL is sorta what you say when you tried something that failed. The new meme, I believe, is "Epic Fail"
